The State Map - Koala Habitat Areas (SEQ)

On 2 October 2006 the Koala Plan came into effect. This Plan includes mapping of Koala Habitat Areas for particular local government areas in the South East Queensland region (the State Map - Koala Habitat Areas).

The Koala Plan and the SEQ Regional Plan refer to Koala Habitat Areas. Koala Habitat Areas are made up of Koala Conservation Areas, Koala Sustainability Areas and Urban Koala Areas. These areas are identified on the State Map for South-east Queensland.

The non-statutory Koala Living Areas are shown on a separate set of maps (see below).

For full details on the policies, criteria and principles relating to each Koala Habitat Area, please refer to the Koala Plan.

Please note that at this stage, Koala Conservation Areas, Koala Sustainability Areas and Urban Koala Areas relate only to the SEQ Region.

Koala Conservation Areas

The Koala Conservation Areas were previously mapped as either A1 or A2 areas. That is, they contain significant koala populations and are areas that provide important habitat linkages. They are generally found in the Regional Landscape and Rural Production Area of the SEQ Regional Plan. For a detailed definition of a Koala Conservation Area go to Table 2 of the Koala Plan.

Koala Sustainability Areas

The Koala Sustainability Areas were previously mapped as either A1 or A2 areas. That is, they contain significant koala populations and are areas that provide important habitat linkages. The koala sustainability areas are found in the Urban Footprint but have a rural planning intent. For a detailed definition of a Koala Sustainability Area go to Table 2 of the Koala Plan.

Urban Koala Areas

Urban Koala Areas were previously mapped as either A1 or A2 areas. That is, they contain significant koala populations are areas that provide important habitat linkages. The Urban Koala Areas are found in the Urban Footprint but generally have an urban purpose planning intent. For a detailed definition of an Urban Koala Area go to Table 2 of the Koala Plan.

You may also live in a Koala Living Area. Koala Living Areas occur outside the Koala Habitat Areas and are not subject to any statutory processes to protect koalas and their habitat under the Koala Plan.

Koala Living Areas are areas outside the Koala Conservation Areas, Koala Sustainability Areas and Urban Koala Areas that support pockets of highly fragmented koala habitat where koala populations generally occur in low densities. These areas have no statutory intent (i.e. they are not subject to any statutory planning processes to protect koalas or their habitat under the Koala Plan). For a detailed definition of a Koala Living Area go to Table 2 of the Koala Plan.
